Freshman Reading Program

High school seniors from Crossroads College Preparatory High School, Metro High School, and University City High School participated in the Washington University Freshman Reading Program. Just like all incoming Washington University freshmen, the high school students received a copy of Einstein’s Dreams, by Alan Lightman. They visited the Danforth Campus to participate in a book discussion with a faculty member, a guided tour of the Kemper Art Museum, and a campus tour. Above, students from University City High School analyze a work of art in the “Windows Interface” exhibit at the Kemper Art Museum.

Service First at Barbara C. Jordan Elementary

Service First is an opportunity for incoming freshmen to volunteer in St. Louis and to identify ways to stay involved in the community throughout the year. Service First is held every year during Labor Day weekend. Over 1,000 students, staff, and faculty volunteer at 12 public schools to help brighten schools for the children. In fall 2007, a group of 100 freshmen spent four hours at Barbara C. Jordan Elementary School in University City. In addition to brightening the playground, hallways, and teacher lounge, students focused on making the school’s science lab an engaging learning center. Under the guidance of the University’s Science Outreach Program, students designed seven bulletin boards, created a reading center, and catalogued all the equipment and supplies.
