Bears Athletics Ranks 1st in NCAA Div. III

After completing the fall sports season, the Washington University Department of Athletics ranked first in the 2007-08 United States Academy Directors’ Cup Division III standings. Points are awarded based on final rankings in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championship tournaments, ranking the best athletics programs in each division. WUSTL is a perennial powerhouse at the Division III level.

The fall season produced the University’s 13th national team championship, as the volleyball team defeated the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater for the trophy. It was Washington U.’s ninth volleyball national championship, an NCAA record.

The winter season started on a strong note as both the men’s and women’s basketball teams began the year as the No. 1 team in the country in several polls. Both have high expectations to reach the NCAA tournament again this year, as both teams reached the Final Four a year ago. The swimming teams are currently in the top-10 in the country and looking to perform well at the NCAA Championships. Also, look for another strong showing in the spring from the softball team, which is coming off a national runner-up finish.

Admission is FREE for most sporting events, so come out and support the Bears. For schedules and other information, please check out the WU Athletics Web site at http://bearsports.wustl.edu or call 314.935.5220.
